Protection of workers from exposure to carcinogens or mutagens: second proposal (CMD 2)

چکیده
This note seeks to provide an initial analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the European Commission's impact assessment (IA) accompanying the above proposal, adopted on 10 January 2017 and referred to Parliament's Committee on Employment and Social Affairs (EMPL). The proposal intends to amend the Carcinogens and Mutagens Directive 2004/37/EC2 (CMD) by establishing binding occupational exposure limit values3 (BOELVs) for the inhalation route of exposure and/or binding skin notations for seven carcinogenic chemical agents. The current proposal ('CMD 2') follows and complements a previous one,5 covering thirteen carcinogenic chemical agents, while work has already started on a third proposal concerning five additional carcinogenic chemical agents with a view to its presentation in early 2018. All together, the three proposals concern 25 priority chemical agents that have been selected through a consultative approach involving stakeholders at Member State and social partner levels (IA, p. 15).

[Occupational exposure to chromium(VI) compounds].
This article discusses the effect of chromium(VI) (Cr(VI)) on human health under conditions of acute and chronic exposure in the workplace. Chromium(VI) compounds as carcinogens and/or mutagens pose a direct danger to people exposed to them. If carcinogens cannot be eliminated from the work and living environments, their exposure should be reduced to a minimum. In the European Union the propose...

Introduction: Noise Induced Hearing Loss(NIHL) is among the most common occupational diseases which may cause irreversible and permanent hearing loss. Noise is the most frequent preventable occupational exposure. The most importanmt cause of NIHL is exposure to noise more than 85 dB and not to use hearing protection devices. Considering the importance of hearing protection deivices for preventi...
متن کاملAge-Related Differences in Susceptibility to Carcinogenesis. II. Approaches for Application and Uncertainty Analyses for Individual Genetically Acting Carcinogens
In an earlier report we developed a quantitative likelihood-based analysis of the differences in sensitivity of rodents to mutagenic carcinogens across three life stages (fetal, birth to weaning, and weaning to 60 days) relative to exposures in adult life. Here we draw implications for assessing human risks for full lifetime exposures, taking into account three types of uncertainties in making ...
متن کاملChemical and biological work-related risks across occupations in Europe: a review
BACKGROUND Work-related health inequalities are determined to some extent by an unequal exposure to chemical and biological risk factors of disease. Although their potential economic burden in the European Union (EU-25) might be substantial, comprehensive reviews focusing on the distribution of these risks across occupational groups are limited. Thus, the main objective of this review is to pro...
متن کاملDoes Exposure to Static Magnetic Fields Generated by Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scanners Raise Safety Problems for Personnel?
MRI workers are occupationally exposed to static and time-varying gradient magnetic fields. While the 24-hour time-averaged exposure to static magnetic fields is about a few mT, the maximum static field strength can be as high as 500 mT during patient setup. Over the past several years, our laboratory has performed extensive experiments on the health effects of exposure of animal models and h...
